Today was Jaywalker U’s first Wednesday Workshop. Wednesday Workshops provide the JWU students and anyone who is interested with opportunities to explore the question, “How do I want to be in the world?” Men from Solutions, JWU, The Landing, CMC staff, and Jaywalker staff all gathered together to listen to Peg O’Connor, international speaker on Philosophy and Addiction, talk about ethical awareness, the meaning of life, and philosophy and addiction. Many of the guests today have taken a Philosophy course over the years but today’s class was a good way to tie philosophy ideas with the disease of addiction. Mike F, student at JWU, said, “I have a lot of knowledge about philosophers such as Socrates, Aristotle, and Kierkegaard but had never thought about their ideas in comparison to the disease of addiction. It was very informative and something I plan to pursue through the rest of my education.” One of the vital parts of our recovery is the development of broadening our thinking and that’s just what we did today. Jaywalker would like to thank Peg for showing us a new way to think about philosophy, addiction, and our lives.
We would like to invite anyone interested in attending next week’s Wednesday Workshop from 9-12 at 734 Main Street here in Carbondale. Patty English, Dr. of Communication Studies, will be joining us from Minnesota to present on re-entry into the world, journaling, and skill building. Just another way the Jaywalker community is broadening their horizons through education.
