USA Mental Health First Aid

The USA Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course continues to expand their training in order to address the needs of various demographics.  Mental Health First Aid is an in-person training that teaches you how to help people developing a mental illness or in a crisis.  Janet DeMars, one of our Jaywalker counselors, has recently completed certification in the Higher Education module of Mental Health First Aid.  In addition to the higher education designation, the MHFA organization also has modules that focus on veterans and the military, public safety, and those that live in a rural area.  The MHFA training is an 8-hour course and will be offered this spring semester at Colorado Mountain College on Wednesday nights at the Carbondale campus. Avalanche Safety Tips

Winter is here and with it came feet of snow! However exciting this may be, there are some adherent risks involved with the amount of snow this early in the season. In order to have a safe and fun time in the back-country we must take precautions. Whether you are an avalanche novice or expert, the Recreation.gov site suggests the following rules when in avalanche terrain: Never travel alone. Allow only one person at a time to cross avalanche terrain while others wait in a safe location. Make sure everyone carries avalanche rescue gear and knows how to use it. Finally, look for recent avalanches, which indicate the snow is unstable. While these are some great things to remember, we could all benefit from the knowledge taught by professionals. Colorado Mountain College is offering courses next semester titled: Avalanche Awareness Level I and Avalanche Safety I. The goal of avalanche…

CMC Presentations

Janet DeMars, the Director of Jaywalker U, was busy last week supporting the local campuses of Colorado Mountain College.  Last Tuesday night, October 28th, she presented the topic of addiction for the Gift of Learning Series at the Carbondale campus.  Janet offered a definition of addiction, theories and models of addiction, the criteria for the DSM-V diagnosis and facilitated a question and answer session afterwards.  On Thursday, October 30th, Janet presented to the Early Alert Task Force at the Spring Valley campus.  This presentation included statistics about college drinking (80% of all college students drink), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and the Stages of Change.  MI is an interviewing tool that will help staff meet students where they are at, and, by learning the Stages of Change, they will have a better sense of a student’s readiness to make a change. Operations Team Building

Last Friday, the Jaywalker Lodge operations team had the opportunity to step out of the office to work on team building at Colorado Mountain College’s Spring Valley campus high ropes course. Guided by Johann Aberger – a mountaineer, life coach, and adjunct professor, we spent half the day learning about how our team functioned in unfamiliar territory. Johann was quick to identify our strengths and weaknesses as he watched us maneuver through a series of low ropes courses as a group. After a bit of reflection, we were ready to take what we had learned to the high ropes course. Identifying challenges and working towards a common goal as a team, we all successfully navigated the course. It was a fun and challenging day that helped each one of us identify our strengths and weaknesses, and with our new found knowledge we can create an even stronger operations team. Kortney…

JWU Colleges

Jaywalker U collaborates not only with Colorado Mountain College (CMC), but also works closely with Colorado Technical University (CTU) and Grand Canyon University (GCU).  The relationship with CTU and GCU lets Jaywalker U accept students on rolling admissions.  This means that not only do we have students start our program at the beginning of each semester, but we can also have students start our program mid-semester and take online classes through CTU and GCU. Classes at CTU and GCU start on a weekly and monthly basis.  This flexibility allows ours students the opportunity to take classes when they need as well as a variety of different classes. 29 Years

Jaywalker U Program Director, Janet DeMars, celebrated 29 years of sobriety yesterday! Janet has been with Jaywalker U for two years now and has been a tremendous help to the students as well as myself. Along with working individually with the Jaywalker U students, Janet also counsels students at Colorado Mountain College. After moving to Carbondale from Minnesota Janet rekindled her love for the outdoors. She picked up mountain biking and road bike riding the day she got here. Recently, she started racing road bikes across the state of Colorado. Last month she participated in a 100 mile road bike ride and rumor has she will be entering another one next month. Congratulations Janet and thank you for everything you do! Donnie Hagenbart Program Coordinator Jaywalker U
