Poetry Workshop

Solutions took a break from our usual Thursday schedule and signed up for a poetry workshop.  It was facilitated by James Nave (www.jamesnave.com).  Once again, when we put ourselves out there and try new things, we are not disappointed.  Here is Solutions client John C’s perspective. I have to admit that when I was told about our four hour poetry workshop, I was less than thrilled.  Prior to being in the workshop my experience consisted of stealing others poetry from the internet, adding a few extra words and giving it to girls as my own work. I went in closed minded and within 2 minutes of arriving, I was called to the front of the room. There were maybe 20 people in the class and I was asked to form a poem from a list of words on the board. I was anxious and scared but as I started to…

May We Never Forget

The men of Solutions aided the Town of Carbondale in planting 8 Memorial trees at the Third Street Center Sat. morning.  The tree pictured is a Snow Crabapple and was donated by Jaywalker in memoriam to those who have lost their battle with the disease of addiction.  In the 9 years I have been working here, we have lost a number of our brethren.   Those men live today in our consciousness, ever reminding us of how fortunate we are to have captured the magic of sobriety so elusive to so many.  May we never forget.  “No addict/alcoholic dies in vain”.  Believe it, for their legacy lives in all of us.  Carpe Diem! Synchronicity and Sacred Space

Through storytelling and dance, Synchronicity & the Sacred Space probes the strange landscape where scientific thought encounters the unknown, and human perception and reality are fluid partners in an enigmatic dance. I received a phone call last week from my good friend, Rita requesting some volunteer help to set up for a Dance event to be held Sunday night at Roaring Fork HS. I coordinated with Fran of Aspen Dance Connection to schedule our work time Sunday morning. Initially, I balked at giving up my normal Sunday morning Spiritual fellowship but decided that sometimes it’s a good idea to change up our routines. Myself, two Alumni, and two Jaywalker Lodge clients arrived at the High School to begin our “stage crew” work. At this point, I wasn’t quite sure what type of dance event it was and quickly became more confused as we begin the set-up and the event format…

A Conversation on Addiction with the Dalai Lama

Third Street Center Film Night presents a conversation on Craving, Desire, and Addiction with his Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and Nora Volkow, MD, Director-National Institute on Drug Abuse. The conference focuses its attention on craving, desire, and addiction, as these are among the most pressing causes of human suffering. By bringing contemplative practitioners and scholars from Buddhist and Christian traditions together with a broad array of scientific researchers in the fields of desire and addiction, hopefully new understandings will arise that may ultimately lead to improved treatment of the root causes of craving and its many manifestations. The latest neuroscience of addiction is discussed as well as the growing understanding of mindfulness practice and other brain training programs as intervention in addiction. We will be taking a group of men from Jaywalker to participate in this streaming event at the Third Street Center. The event begins at 7 PM tonight,…

Third Street Center State Fair

Follow us to the Third Street Center an see what the hubbub is all about…The fall fair is open to everyone.” Kat Rich volunteer event coordinator The Third Street Center here in Carbondale was bustling with activity Friday evening. This was the inaugural “State Fair” event which featured a carnival atmosphere with performances by local artists and musicians, games, food, and fun for kids and adults alike. I had the opportunity to play Eco-jeopardy, hear some great music, and install a leaf on the Gratitude Tree. There was a chili cook-off (I’ll have a vegan entry next year), a Cake Walk with our very own Rocky’s famous Death by Chocolate cake and ample quantities of State Fair food and snacks. The TSC ,Third Street Center is a community place that promotes inspiration, sustainability, and creative exchange. This event was a “Friend – Raiser” to show its gratitude for the community’s…
