This is not Goodbye

On Friday, February 21st, members of the Jaywalker Community said goodbye to Joe Tate with a going away party and barbeque that was held at the Pew estate in Carbondale. The high class soiree was attended by a multitude of Joe’s friends and co-workers and a fun time was had by all. I did the cooking. The food was excellent. Joe is leaving us this week for Eagle to support his lovely girlfriend, Stacy, as she pursues a career in the financial industry. As one of the first Landing techs, Joe helped the program get off to a successful start. His kind and approachable demeanor, as well as his high recovery IQ, aided many clients in making their transition. Joe is also a very active member in the alumni community and is the captain of current and defending Serenity Scramble golf tournament championship team.  Joe was able to accomplish this…

Giving Life

All of us working at Jaywalker Lodge are given a unique gift every day; the opportunity to give the gift of life and hope to the clients in our community of recovery.  We work in an environment of brokenness, where lives and hearts are in chaos.  What do each of us do with that everyday opportunity?  I must confess that there are days when the last thing I feel like doing is caring for someone else.  Maybe I am the only one in that boat, but my guess is I’m not alone. The crazy thing about those days, the days I am so self-centered, tend to be the days when God places right in my face the greatest opportunity to encourage and bring hope into the life of a client or co-worker .  This concept of giving life and hope to others is pre-eminent in my mind today because, as…

Jaywalkers Renew Passion for the Links

Jaywalkers Sweep RVR Club Championship “ Having stepped away from competitive golf for the last five years of my life. I was extremely excited and slightly nervous when Jaywalker presented myself and three other Jaywalkers with the opportunity to play in the River Valley Ranch Club Championship. This event would consist of two rounds of golf with prizes being awarded for both the low gross and low net scores. Setting relatively high expectations for myself, I made every attempt to ready my game for the tournament. I had played solid golf in the weeks leading up to the tournament and was ready see what I could do against a competitive field. Somewhat unexpectedly, the only real competition I faced all weekend was from other Jaywalkers and Steve B., the head of Jaywalkers golf program. A round of 73 on the first day, my best round in four years, left me…

Tee Time

“Golf is the closest game to the game we call life.  You get bad breaks from good shots, you get good breaks from bad shots – but you have to play the ball as it lies.” -Bobby Jones Golf is not only a game that teaches you how to deal with good and bad breaks, it teaches you about respect, integrity, honesty, problem solving, and so much more.  Jaywalker Lodge feels that these and other lessons learned through the game of golf, translate directly into a successful life in recovery. Respect and Integrity – Golf is a game full of tradition, and much of that tradition revolves around respect for others and your surroundings.  It takes the form of fixing your ball marks and divots, leaving the course in the same or better shape then you found it.  It teaches you to respect others, by not talking during their play…

Congratulations Julie

Over the past several years we have all seen and experienced Julie’s hard work here at Jaywalker Lodge. What we didn’t see is the fact that she also balances her work, raises three teenage girls, and has been tirelessly working towards completing her degree. As of today, she has turned in her Capstone project which means, but for some paperwork and logistics, she is a college graduate! Julie, your hard work and dedication towards achieving this goal is an inspiration to me and to all of us. Thanks for being such a valuable part of our community. Hot Yoga Steve Jaywalker Lodge

Happy Birthday Steve

At Jaywalker Lodge we believe the first 24 hours of a clients stay are invaluable.  It is during that time that each client begins the process of putting down roots and establishing relationships that will last months and hopefully years into the future.  Rarely has a client been subjected to a more tumultuous first 24 hours than our own “Hot Yoga” Steve. Picture one part “Apocalypse Now” and one part “Lord of the Flies” set not in the jungle or on an island,  but rather in a semi-insane 16 hour van ride fading to a pitch black horse pasture campsite smack dab in the middle of one of the most poverty stricken locations in America.  Yeah that’s a good recipe for success right? Well, for Steve it was the perfect introduction to Jaywalker Lodge.   I mean if he could survive the ticks, Mooney running around shirtless, a dude eating…
