JWU Multi-pitch Climb

Recently JWU spent the day with Johann Aberger and two other expert rock climbing guides for what I thought was to be a short jaunt up Petit Blue.  The jaunt was indeed short, but the climb was long and challenging.  The focus of this outing was to face fear and move through it with courage, and for me, trust in our guide, Amos,  to whom I was attached with a climbing rope for three hours.  I have rocked climbed in the past, but past experiences did little to prepare me for the climb up Petit Blue.  It was a multi-pitch climb in which my climbing partner, Matt, was connected to me equal distance as I was to our guide.  When I use the term multi-pitch, I am using it lightly.  I did not count the number of pitches, but suffice it to say that a dozen would be an understatement.  Fear…

2014 JWU Fall Orientation

Every semester the Jaywalker U students embark on a team-building/transformational trip where they not only work on themselves but also bond with their peers. For the second year in a row the Jaywalker U men headed to Steamboat Springs to explore their inner selves, get to know their peers, and spend some time relaxing and playing before starting the fall semester. We started the trip on Monday at Rabbit Ears Pass with local Carbondale life coach, Johann Aberger, for a day of hiking, climbing, team-building, and personal transformation. Throughout the day the students spent time looking at who they are and who they want to become all the while maintaining the principles of recovery and living a day at a time. At day’s end, Johann challenged everyone to look at their values, their passions, and to write a life purpose statement. After returning from the day with Johann, the guys…

Students will talk about their work with Johann, their work in school, and their work on their recovery. The ceremony will run from 12pm-2pm at Colorado Mountain College here in Carbondale and will be catered by Smoke Modern Barbeque. This will be a major turning point for our men and we hope to see you there! Donnie Hagenbart Program Coordinator Jaywalker U

JWU Ski Day

As the school week comes to an end, the Jaywalker U students hit the slopes. After a stressful last week of school before finals it was time to have some fun. It was a good reminder that in order to have fun we must work hard. For many of the students this will be their first time entering finals week sober. Sobriety opens up doors that we never thought were possible, until now. Good luck next week guys! Donnie Hagenbart Program Coordinator Jaywalker U

Elementary Education

Colorado Mountain College (CMC) is seeking approval for another bachelor’s degree program in elementary education. Students would be able to pursue elementary education at Colorado Mountain College’s Edwards and Glenwood Springs campuses.  This is not the only bachelor’s degree that could come our way; CMC is proposing a bachelor’s degree in nursing and one in applied science. Now that CMC is offering more and more bachelor’s degrees, Jaywalker U students are excited to be able stay in this sober community and receive the degrees that they are pursuing. JWU Thanksgiving Eve

Today the Jaywalker U students are preparing for Thanksgiving Dinner tomorrow. Half of the students have made it home for the holidays while the other half will be spending Thanksgiving with one of the students families. The students are responsible for bringing all of the sides for Thanksgiving Dinner. So far we have: mashed potatoes, sweet potato marshmallow mash, sweet corn soufflé, cornbread, and green bean casserole. Chef Brian’s cooking classes are really coming in handy this holiday season! We are in the spirit of Thanksgiving and are remembering everything that we are thankful for this year. Donnie Hagenbart Program Coordinator Jaywalker U

Vulnerability

“Vulnerability is not weakness. And that myth is profoundly dangerous.” – Brene Brown When I entered treatment a year ago, vulnerability was a flaw, a defect that would ultimately hurt me as a man. That wall was broken down very quickly. I learned to share my emotions as well as my story with others. I learned to open myself up because I was taught that I could not overcome the disease of addiction alone. I’d like to say that this year has been easy, but quite frankly it has been one of the most challenging of my life. That doesn’t mean that it hasn’t been rewarding. This past year has given me things that I never thought possible; and it all started with me being vulnerable, being open to people and ideas and of course: asking for the help. I have been given my life back, I have friends who…

Last week Jaywalker U student, Nate F, celebrated his 21st birthday. For the first time since being a teenager he was able to celebrate a birthday completely clean and sober. Friends of the community, staff, and even his family stopped by Jaywalker U for cake and 30 pounds of fresh east coast lobsters. Happy Birthday Nate; 21 is a tough birthday for a recovering addict, but you made the best of it! Donnie Hagenbart Program Coordinator Jaywalker U
