Jaywalker Celebrates: Art Kleinschmidt Phd

Jaywalker Solutions addiction treatment center

Art Kleinschmidt recently became a Doctor of Philosophy after completing years of hard work.  During this time, he authored a treatment program, Planting Seeds:  A Client-Centered Approach to Addiction Treatment.   He divided this program into four phases, which lends itself to moving a client from early treatment to second stage recovery.   In addition, he completed research about the program’s efficacy. Art started his addiction career at Hazelden, where he received a Master’s degree. He returned to Jaywalker in 2009 after running his own treatment business in Gypsum.   Since that time, Art has been sharing his counseling expertise along with his experience, strength, and hope at Jaywalker Lodge and the Solutions Program.  Most recently, he has been promoted and will take over the assessment program at the Landing. Congratulations to Art Kleinschmidt Ph.D., LPC, MBA, LAC

Pine Ridge Oglala Lakota Reservation: South Dakota

A group of Jaywalker clients and staff had the opportunity to travel to South Dakota and work a nonprofit, called Re-member, to assist the people of the Oglala Lakota Nation. Re-member coordinates volunteers to participate in various work projects across the Reservation, helping to rebuild relationships, homes and lives.  Work projects included building and delivering bunkbeds to the children, skirting trailers to combat the cold and wind, and building steps and decks to improve their living environment.  Re-member provides a cultural immersion to the Lakota community in hopes of creating solidarity among all people.“ The past week, I was at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation on a service trip.  While there I built skirting on a house, one day, and spent two days building bunkbeds.  It was a very humbling experience and game me a sense of selflessness that I have never felt before.  I have never thought of a…

Pat S Celebrates 6

Pat & Ben sober life

My first time meeting Pat Shaffer was as a client in the Lodge when Pat was volunteering. Since I already liked MTN biking, and he led many MTN bike outings as a volunteer the friendship came easy. In fact on one of our first rides he had to pull cactus out of my butt on a ride, that’s the kind of intimacy among men we talk about here at Jaywalker. Pat is around my age and we talked a lot about life. I remember being on expedition in Twin lakes and having a particularly tough time dealing with my impending divorce. Pat and I sat in the van one day after a ride and talked about it for almost an hour. His calm demeanor helped me immensely. We are both hockey fans and as a client I was allowed to bike to his house to watch the hockey playoffs. 12…

Harmony Golf Tournament

Harmony Sober Golfing event

It would take a special team to win the Howard Clark Award at the Harmony Golf Outing on Monday June 29th, and the Jaywalker participants, Dirk Eldredge, John Schneier, Pat Shaffer and Jim Soda were up to that challenge.  Granted, the trophy was for most average score at the Lake Valley Golf Club, however it was the biggest trophy by far.  There were 40 footers being drained by Dirk, precision fairway placement by Soda, stellar short game from Shaffer and of course, the booming drives of Schneier.  All in all a complete success.  Maybe next year a little more strategy to win the thing, as long as we don’t sacrifice the fun.

Furthering Education

John & Pat sober living

Furthering ones education in recovery can come in all forms. Whether it is a counseling license, finishing a college degree, or obtaining a National Fire Fighter Certification there is always something to be learned. Director of Admissions, Pat Shaffer, and alumnus, John Schneier, are pictured here learning how to rescue kittens from trees. What are you doing to further your education?

Extreme Recovery

Jaywalkers newest employee and Chief Recovery Officer, Dirk Eldredge, joined the Jaywalker cross-fitters for his first experience with CrossFit. Although Dirk didn’t have the nicest things to say during the work out, he had a change of heart afterwards and officially signed up to work out four times a week at Sopris CrossFit. Dirk, you make a great addition to the team and we will see you at noon tomorrow! Donnie Hagenbart Admissions & Marketing Manager Jaywalker Lodge

Congratulations Pat

I remember meeting Pat Shaffer not long after I checked into Jaywalker Lodge in April 2010.  He was volunteering regularly and we both liked to mountain bike. I got to know Pat well on our Monday outings and expeditions.  I specifically remember being on expedition in Twin Lakes, sick with a bad cold, and dealing with a wife who wanted a divorce.  While I was having a really tough time Pat sat with me, we talked about our experiences, and I started to pull myself together a little bit.  No other alum was as helpful to me during this really tough period in my life.  Later in my stay at the Lodge I was frequently invited to Pat’s house to watch the NHL playoffs, and with counselor approval, I went and watched several games there.  It was a great way to start to feel normal again.  I looked at Pat…

Bachelor Party

Jaywalker’s Director of Admissions Pat Shaffer is all set to tie the knot in July, so we took off to Long Boat Key, Florida for a few solid days of bachelor action. While the trip was filled with a full dose of hanging at the beach, tennis, and kicking back, all the excitement happened while shark fishing with Captain Gary. It was a legendary morning on the fishing boat and that left Captain Gary, who has been guiding for 20 years, calling the other fishing guides saying, “You’re never gonna believe this…” To get the details you’ll have to ask Pat next time you see him. I know we’ll be talking about it forever, saying “Remember at Pat’s Bachelor party”. Congratulations Pat! Mike Goerne Director of Operations Jaywalker Lodge

Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE)

Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) at the Advanced International Symposium: Addictive Disorders, Behavioral Health and Mental Health in Colorado Springs   (TRE) Trauma Releasing Exercises are a cutting edge technique in stress reduction, tension releasing and the healing of trauma.  David Berceli, Ph.D. is the creator of this method. TRE consists of a set of simple physical exercises designed to release the chronic muscular tension that is held deep within the structure of the body.  TRE is intended to be used as a self-help method that is easily learned, has immediate effects and can be integrated into a simple daily routine to help restore a sense of inner-peace and relaxation. We have been using the TRE exercises at the Jaywalker Solutions Program since 2010.  The men have personally endorsed TRE as a stress management tool. The first picture shows Dr. Berceli teaching TRE to the military.   The second picture…
