Chutes, Steaks, and Sobriety

Last week a few lucky employees and IOP Clients went to Moab for the first expedition of the year. Lenny B also celebrated his 64th birthday with a dinner out at the Sunset Grill, and his 7th jump. Lenny has helped so many men to achieve lasting sobriety and celebrating him with the current IOP clients was memorable. The focal point of any IOP expedition is golf, hiking, and skydiving. The guys had a beautiful sunny day to “enjoy” the view from high above Moab. Stanley, Dave, and myself are all IOP grads. The opportunity to spend a few days with the guys was a great way to give back and share our experience with them. Thank you Lenny for all you do, Peyton Ward Alumni Coordinator

Lenny Celebrates 8

Lenny sober living

Congratulations to Jaywalker’s own King of Aftercare, Lenny Beaulieu, for celebrating 8 years of sobriety.  He is a man of simple tastes: golf, cigars, Harleys, steak, and jumping out of airplanes.  Let go and let God or the parachute.  Skydiving is the ultimate test of faith and enjoyment of life; a metaphor for the values of a recovering person.  Lenny lives his life with faith and enjoyment.   He is an avid outdoors man, spending his early years working for Outward Bound.  He has also completed the Grand Canyon section of the Colorado River many times.  Lenny’s incredible life journey finally landed him as the Director of Outpatient Services at Jaywalker. I have had the pleasure of co-facilitating the outpatient groups with Lenny.  It has been a great experience for me to learn from his counseling style.  Lenny carries the message of the 12 steps with power and grace.  He has…

IOP Skydivers

Cary sober living

The Jaywalker outpatient clients headed to Moab this past week for three days of golf, mountain biking, skydiving and helicopter riding. A total of 8-clients participated in our trip to Moab along with two staff members from Wednesday March 18 to Friday March 20, 2015. Our men were fully engaged in activities throughout the trip and as usual, represented Jaywalker Lodge in fine form. Six of the eight clients jumped on Friday morning at the Moab airport. Skydive Moab has been hosting Jaywalker clients for 3-years and their professional crew put all at ease before the jump. For 5 of our clients, this was a first jump. Also, a first jump for our Solutions staff member, Cary Pew. For the 2-clients who were not so thrilled with idea of jumping form a perfectly good aircraft, a helicopter ride through the Canyonlands was a sufficient back up activity. The helicopter tour…

Congrats Lenny

Our very own Lenny Beaulieu celebrates 7 years of continuous sobriety even though he was, “never that bad.” Ha. Allow me to explain. I met Lenny when we were patients together on the Tiebout Unit at Hazelden in August of 2007. It was my third time there. I was that bad. However, after about a week on the unit a nice guy with a great smile showed up and told us all that he was here, yes, but just for a quick assessment. He wasn’t that bad! Well, the assessment said differently and Lenny was forced to reconcile his concept of unmanageability with the clear diagnosis of “very bad” which he received from Hazelden Clinical Staff. Luckily, for all involved, Lenny is a teachable man. He went on to resolve that cognitive dissonance to great success! He completed treatment, went to IOP here at Jaywalker, got involved in the recovery…

Dave K Celebrates 3 Years

HE DID IT!!!!! HE ACTUALLY DID IT!!!!! Dave Krimstock has managed to not drink or use drugs for 3 years…  What makes this accomplishment all the more impressive is that Dave arrived in our community three years ago as a scraggly refugee of Boulder’s Bohemian mountain lifestyle. No one ever thought a bearded man from Boulder could possibly stay sober…  the odds were just stacked too high against him. But here Dave stands before you today, an outlier, a man who looked the odds makers in the face, laughed out loud, and bet on himself. When I first met Dave he was still trying to figure out how to properly use shoes. We were enrolled in the Jaywalker MIOP program together. He would show up every night, covered in dirt. At first I just chalked this up to his Boulder heritage, but I eventually found out that he had a…

IOP March Moab Expedition

On March 26-28, 2014 nine Jaywalker MIOP clients, 1-Alumni and 1-staff traveled to Moab, UT for 3-days of fellowship, golf, hiking, bowling, and skydiving. This was an opportunity to get away from the routine of work and treatment in the Roaring Fork Valley and to play together in one of the most beautiful places in the western United States. Wednesday afternoon was shopping, fellowship and a wonderful steak dinner prepared mostly by Richard S. Who knew he could cook and grill with such aplomb. After dinner it was off to the local bowling alley for some serious competition. Thursday dawned windy and cool and everyone was up and planning the day. Tee times were made for six of us and five of us headed off to the Canyonlands National Park for some hiking. We all came back together at the Condos in late afternoon and headed into town for a…

100% Employment

We have a 100% employment rate for the first time ever in the Jaywalker Modified Integrated Outpatient Program. The jobs range from sheet metal and steel fabrication to ticket sales and food service at Aspen SkiCo. Several of our men are working in retail and another is working in holiday seasonal work decorating Aspen’s finest hotels and residences. With gainful employment comes the challenge of balancing work life, social life and recovery life. With a focus on the joy of living, the men can support one another in the MIOP group process and help each other navigate the day to day challenges that can threaten sobriety. This work plays out in our group each Monday and Thursday evening with constructive feedback that challenges behaviors, and the sharing of ideas and behaviors that bring success in recovery. With everyone working, we are challenged to find a day each month where we…

Third Street Center State Fair

Follow us to the Third Street Center an see what the hubbub is all about…The fall fair is open to everyone.” Kat Rich volunteer event coordinator The Third Street Center here in Carbondale was bustling with activity Friday evening. This was the inaugural “State Fair” event which featured a carnival atmosphere with performances by local artists and musicians, games, food, and fun for kids and adults alike. I had the opportunity to play Eco-jeopardy, hear some great music, and install a leaf on the Gratitude Tree. There was a chili cook-off (I’ll have a vegan entry next year), a Cake Walk with our very own Rocky’s famous Death by Chocolate cake and ample quantities of State Fair food and snacks. The TSC ,Third Street Center is a community place that promotes inspiration, sustainability, and creative exchange. This event was a “Friend – Raiser” to show its gratitude for the community’s…
