29 Years

Jaywalker U Program Director, Janet DeMars, celebrated 29 years of sobriety yesterday! Janet has been with Jaywalker U for two years now and has been a tremendous help to the students as well as myself. Along with working individually with the Jaywalker U students, Janet also counsels students at Colorado Mountain College. After moving to Carbondale from Minnesota Janet rekindled her love for the outdoors. She picked up mountain biking and road bike riding the day she got here. Recently, she started racing road bikes across the state of Colorado. Last month she participated in a 100 mile road bike ride and rumor has she will be entering another one next month. Congratulations Janet and thank you for everything you do! Donnie Hagenbart Program Coordinator Jaywalker U

2014 JWU Fall Orientation

Every semester the Jaywalker U students embark on a team-building/transformational trip where they not only work on themselves but also bond with their peers. For the second year in a row the Jaywalker U men headed to Steamboat Springs to explore their inner selves, get to know their peers, and spend some time relaxing and playing before starting the fall semester. We started the trip on Monday at Rabbit Ears Pass with local Carbondale life coach, Johann Aberger, for a day of hiking, climbing, team-building, and personal transformation. Throughout the day the students spent time looking at who they are and who they want to become all the while maintaining the principles of recovery and living a day at a time. At day’s end, Johann challenged everyone to look at their values, their passions, and to write a life purpose statement. After returning from the day with Johann, the guys…

Study Abroad in South Africa

On May 16th Jaywalker U alum, Danny S, will be participating in Colorado Mountain Colleges Study Abroad trip to South Africa. Students will experience the politics, culture and society of South Africa while earning transferable credits in sociology and anthropology. The students will travel to places such as Johannesburg, Cape Town, Soweto, the South African Parliament and local universities and schools.  They will also meet with ANC officials, human rights organizations, local and multinational businesses, and U.S. Embassy staff Danny was one of Jaywalker U’s first students and is well on his way to obtaining his degree. Danny is a prime example of what Jaywalker Lodge and Jaywalker U can do for us. He spends his days sponsoring other alcoholics/addicts, attending class, working, and having fun. Nice work Danny and we hope you have a great time in South Africa! Donnie Hagenbart Program Coordinator Jaywalker U

Last week I had the opportunity to spend three days with the Jaywalker U students in Winter Park, Colorado, for Spring Semester 2014 orientation.  These young men come from all walks of life, they have differing stories, and their personalities are as different as night and day.  Yet, moment-by-moment these young men accepted the quirks of each other, worked together and played together.  Each was accepted, and felt acceptable, as members of the JWU program.  This act of acceptance helped them be more willing to share a part of themselves with the group.  This is the beauty of being accepted.  Acceptance is more of an act and a behavior than a statement or declaration.  The two newest students told their stories to the group, and once again, the act of acceptance was felt in the room due to intimacy, sharing, and relief that they have made it to this point…

Carrying the Message

The Jaywalker U students once again carried the message of recovery last week by making a trip to the Spring Valley campus of Colorado Mountain College.  They met privately with a few students to share their experience, strength, and hope. Drinking on college campuses can be a relaxing way for students to spend their weekends, but for some students it is a glimpse into a much deeper problem of addiction.  The Jaywalker U students have trudged the drinking-using-academic path in the past and failed miserably.  Today they are willing to tells others how differently it can look and how much better and richer their lives can be in recovery.  This is the second time this semester that the Jaywalker U students have reached out to other students at CMC and shared:  what it was like, what happened, and what it’s like now. Janet DeMars Program Director Jaywalker U
