This is not Goodbye

On Friday, February 21st, members of the Jaywalker Community said goodbye to Joe Tate with a going away party and barbeque that was held at the Pew estate in Carbondale. The high class soiree was attended by a multitude of Joe’s friends and co-workers and a fun time was had by all. I did the cooking. The food was excellent. Joe is leaving us this week for Eagle to support his lovely girlfriend, Stacy, as she pursues a career in the financial industry. As one of the first Landing techs, Joe helped the program get off to a successful start. His kind and approachable demeanor, as well as his high recovery IQ, aided many clients in making their transition. Joe is also a very active member in the alumni community and is the captain of current and defending Serenity Scramble golf tournament championship team.  Joe was able to accomplish this…

Congratulations Joe

Joe, congratulations on having 4 years clean!  I have known Joe since we both checked into the Lodge about 4 years ago.  We were part of a really good group,  though a lot of alum would claim the same of their “Jaywalker generation”.  We had the best!  I’m only joking, but not really.  I consider myself lucky to have started my recovery journey with guys I have come to know as great friends.  Joe is definitely one of the friends that I am grateful to have in my life and grateful to have shared some of the same hardships and rewards. Staying at the Elk Springs sober house he was my fellow upstairs roommate.  We took a trip up to his hometown of Sandpoint, Idaho, to gather his belongings and load them in the back of Budget rental truck and drive it back down to CO.  Not an easy task…

Happy 4 years Cary

Jaywalker would like to congratulate our own Cary Pew on four years of sobriety today.  Cary grew up in North Carolina or Michigan, depending on what sports team is playing at the moment. He enjoys skiing in the winter and mountain/road biking, golfing and fishing in the summer, which make for a great fit for the western slope of Colorado.  Cary has battled addiction for many years before checking himself into Jaywalker in 2009.  After graduating Jaywalker, Cary continued into Jaywalker’s sister program Solutions. Following recommendations, Cary moved to a local St Paul Sober House where he and I lived for six months until we found an apartment together in Carbondale.  After a period of volunteering around the lodge, Cary took a night-tech position with Jaywalker eventually working his way up to the day-tech job.  After about a year of employment at the lodge, Cary jumped at the opportunity to…

Jaywalker Composting

A few months ago, alum Joe T and I embarked on an organic journey to line up our values with our actions and establish some sustainable behaviors at Jaywalker Lodge through the process of composting. Composting is a natural process where organic material, such as vegetable scraps, other food waste, and manure decompose and are used as fertilizer and nutrient enrichment for soil. We have been primarily focusing on composting vegetable scraps, fruit scraps, eggshells, and coffee grounds collected in the Jaywalker kitchen with the help of Chef Brian. The result we are hoping for is a organic mixture of compost to assist in the process of growing vegetables in the Jaywalker garden. Some of the Jaywalker food waste has also been distributed throughout the local community to feed chicken, pigs, and other farm animals as a healthy alternative to grain. So far Joe and I are very pleased with the…
