Thank you, Kim

Jaywalker’s Senior Lodge Counselor and Family Program Coordinator, Kim Nuzzo, is retiring this week. Kim, you have been there for us all and we couldn’t be more grateful. Thank you for everything! “I guess you could say I was there at the beginning, at least the beginning of Kim’s arrival to the Roaring Fork Valley and his subsequent hire at Aspen Counseling Center.   We spent the next 15 or 16 years together at that agency before Kim departed for greener pastures at Jaywalker. I believe I owe it to him that I was hired for the same greener pasture some 6 months later. It’s kind of funny, but Kim is a guy I feel I have always known while actually spending little time with him away from the work environment. One notable exception to this was our fantastic trip to the Blues Awards in Memphis during May of 2012. I…

Happy Birthday Jeff

The Jeff Kremer, runner extraordinaire and Director of Clinical Operations, celebrated his Belly Button Birthday yesterday.  Jeff is currently out of town celebrating this momentous occasion, but he is never far from our hearts here at Jaywalker.  When interviewing for a position at Jaywalker, Jeff makes it a point to come off as quite intimidating, and while he may never forgive me for saying this, he is the exact opposite of that. After working with Jeff for almost a year, I’ve come to see that it was an exterior facade.   Jeff makes everyone at Jaywalker laugh daily, whether it’s during the winter and he’s talking about the very fun commute he gets to make on HWY 82 or some other comment he has made with that straight face of his right before he breaks a smile.  He’s intelligent, speaks his mind, super proud of his kids and loves to read…

Kim Nuzzo Celebrates 28 Years

Kim and I met in November of 1991 in Aspen. We had both been hired by the Aspen Counseling Center. We shared an office together for fifteen years. We worked as co-therapists in an IOP program. We both loved our work and our new home- Aspen.  A unique close bond grew over the years. In addition to the hours we spent at work, we spent time together hiking,skiing,golfing, etc.. Our families grew close and my wife called Kim my second wife. We got so close that we both developed coronary artery problems at the same time. As you can imagine, our director thought our professional work ethic was outstanding.  His enthusiasm about the IOP program was limitless. You can ask him, his name is Jeff Kremer. Kim always tells me that he learned all his therapeutic skills from working with me. He’s prone to exaggeration – it was only about 90%. I never would have made the…

Our “Kremer”

His has been a quiet presence of strength, wisdom, rationality within the recovery community here in the Roaring Fork Valley for at least twenty five years; good research would show it’s even longer if we take into account the beginning of his career in the Midwest.   I’m speaking of the man I often refer to as a kind of a recovery “Dr. Spock,” our own Jeff Kremer.  He is a humble man who’s spent his career helping those of us who have the illness of chemical dependency.   “Kremer,” as he has allowed me to address him for twenty plus years, would have been successful in any field but he chose “us.”  If you want to have an stimulating conversation, ask him about any of these topics:  the blues, jazz, politics, the stock market, Milton Erickson, mental health, addiction, James Joyce, existentialism, baseball, football,  or running.  You will soon discover you’re…

Congratulations Lois

Our friend and colleague, Lois Porcelain, celebrates 23 years of sobriety today!  Lois came to Jaywalker Lodge from Hazelden in January of 2006. She has served in several clinical roles since that time, but most recently was promoted to the Program Director position in June of 2011. Lois has proven herself to be a valued staff member of Jaywalker Lodge beloved by the men she works with. Lois nurtures, models and leads our clients onto their own path of recovery during their stay at the Lodge. She has a special touch with our younger men and those struggling with psychiatric issues. From my observation, many of our men perceive Lois to be the “wise mother” of the Lodge from whom they can learn the ways of 12 step recovery. This is the gift she offers to all on a daily basis. Lois has shown herself to be not only a…
