Brendon K: A Decade Sober

Brendon Kerton turns 10 Today! Well, what can we say? Brendon (Often referred to as Brenden J) by his public has come a long way since graduating from Jaywalker Lodge now nearly a decade ago. Brendon’s greatest accomplishment no doubt, was falling deeply in love to his Bride Tracey and raising their four children together. Brendon hails from the frozen tundra of New England and will sadly parish as a devoted Patriot’s fan. Brendon is indeed a family man as he remains super close to his folks/family on the east coast and again, gets the greatest joy of his life through loving on his two children alongside Tracey. Brendon, much like Forest Gump just keeps running and running as this makes his heart sing and his head clear. He has been a devoted & successful long distance runner forever it seems and this allows him the strength and focus to care for…

Sopris Sun: Finding Recovery Through Service

Finding Recovery Through Service By Megan Tackett Sopris Sun Staff One of the men a group of Jaywalkers encountered on a recent Houston service trip was living in his car after the flooding (the car had also flooded, but it provided better accommodations than his destroyed home). “Insurance wasn’t helping,” said Cordes Symmes, Solutions Program coordinator at the Jaywalker Lodge sober house. “He’s eating mangoes that he’s picked off a tree. He doesn’t know what to do. I can’t imagine how somebody lives like that, [but] you see it.” Months after Hurricane Harvey devastated the Houston area — affecting about a third of residential units — there are still more than 47,000 displaced people living in hotels and motels, according to a Nov. 22 article by Rebecca Elliott published in the Houston Chronicle. Tens of thousands more continue to struggle to eek out an existence in what remains of their…

Jaywalker Service – Houston, TX

She’d dedicated her life in service to others, working homeless shelters throughout the city of Houston. Carrione could not anticipate the day that she would be joining them, her home ravaged by 4′ of floodwater. She spent 2 days across the street on the second floor of a neighbor’s home. She was joined by many, some elderly and wheelchair bound. Rescue boats finally arrived to take them to higher ground. The ordeal had just begun for she and thousands more. 3 months living in a motel, void of her possessions, her cars, her home. Nothing left but resolve, starting from scratch. She welcomed us with prayers of thanks, grateful not to be forgotten in the haze of catastrophe. Her recovery was our recovery, a common bond of working together to pick up the pieces if shattered lives. Our task involved more than gutting walls and hauling debris. It was about…

Pine Ridge Oglala Lakota Reservation: South Dakota

A group of Jaywalker clients and staff had the opportunity to travel to South Dakota and work a nonprofit, called Re-member, to assist the people of the Oglala Lakota Nation. Re-member coordinates volunteers to participate in various work projects across the Reservation, helping to rebuild relationships, homes and lives.  Work projects included building and delivering bunkbeds to the children, skirting trailers to combat the cold and wind, and building steps and decks to improve their living environment.  Re-member provides a cultural immersion to the Lakota community in hopes of creating solidarity among all people.“ The past week, I was at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation on a service trip.  While there I built skirting on a house, one day, and spent two days building bunkbeds.  It was a very humbling experience and game me a sense of selflessness that I have never felt before.  I have never thought of a…

Solutions Expedition: Pine Ridge, South Dakota

The Solutions expedition to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota was a complete success! Nico, Wesley, and I, were the staff members for the trip and we had a group of 8 fantastic clients. Each and every client had extremely positive attitudes and participated fully with all of the projects and general work that was done throughout the week. This was my third trip to Pine Ridge (second as a staff member) and this was by far the best group of guys that I have had the opportunity to be a part of. Everyone was very receptive to the entire process of being there, serving, and learning about the culture and history of the natives. There were two college groups, a group of eighth grade students from Boulder, a group from Americorps, and a few other individuals who were all staying at Re-member with us and working with us…

New Jaywalker Website & Video

We have launched our new website! Jaywalker Lodge inspires men in early recovery to engage in an authentic journey of healing and self-discovery built upon personal accountability, deep and lasting friendships, and the belief that absolutely anything is possible in sobriety! We invite you to take a closer look at the Jaywalker experience and our Carbondale, CO community. Click here for our new video!

Walking Together

We walked together making this family program the quintessential Jaywalker experience. We had men from our whole continuum, Lodge, Solutions, Sober-Living and MIOP, proving to all that remaining in our care is a good thing to do. Jacquie calmed us down while Art Kleinschmidt showed his many skills. The mountain gave us perfect snow and Chef Brian had a baby. A Jaywalker man stepped up, selflessly helping in our new dad’s absence. The techs, Seth, Tony, and Cable were instrumental in keeping our families happy while Steve Shipway became known as more than just a facilities assistant and cook; he is now known as a fine chef and dedicated man and friend. Thanks to all those who gave of themselves to make this family program a great success and congratulations to our Chef and his bride for sharing with us the birth of their first… Vincent Trom. To the staff:…

Lenny Celebrates 8

Lenny sober living

Congratulations to Jaywalker’s own King of Aftercare, Lenny Beaulieu, for celebrating 8 years of sobriety.  He is a man of simple tastes: golf, cigars, Harleys, steak, and jumping out of airplanes.  Let go and let God or the parachute.  Skydiving is the ultimate test of faith and enjoyment of life; a metaphor for the values of a recovering person.  Lenny lives his life with faith and enjoyment.   He is an avid outdoors man, spending his early years working for Outward Bound.  He has also completed the Grand Canyon section of the Colorado River many times.  Lenny’s incredible life journey finally landed him as the Director of Outpatient Services at Jaywalker. I have had the pleasure of co-facilitating the outpatient groups with Lenny.  It has been a great experience for me to learn from his counseling style.  Lenny carries the message of the 12 steps with power and grace.  He has…

CP turns 6

Cary sober living

Cary Pew is a prime example of a Jaywalker who comes to the valley to get sober, but stays in the valley because he has found a life rich in sobriety.  Cary has transformed from a man broken by his disease to a service-oriented Jaywalker employee.  Cary is the core of what is good and productive in the Solutions program.  He always makes himself available to the men, takes them on service expeditions (no easy feat), and is the man behind and responsible for all things pertaining to the Solution’s daily schedule.  Cary has trained and educated himself to become a Certified Addiction Counselor, starting as a CAC-I and working as a tech.  He has now taken all the course work necessary for a CAC-II endorsement.  In addition to being The Main Man at Solutions, Cary also helps Lenny Beaulieu as a co-facilitator at our MIOP program on Monday and…
