Solutions Expedition: Pine Ridge, South Dakota

The Solutions expedition to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota was a complete success! Nico, Wesley, and I, were the staff members for the trip and we had a group of 8 fantastic clients. Each and every client had extremely positive attitudes and participated fully with all of the projects and general work that was done throughout the week. This was my third trip to Pine Ridge (second as a staff member) and this was by far the best group of guys that I have had the opportunity to be a part of. Everyone was very receptive to the entire process of being there, serving, and learning about the culture and history of the natives. There were two college groups, a group of eighth grade students from Boulder, a group from Americorps, and a few other individuals who were all staying at Re-member with us and working with us…

2015 Twin Lakes Expedition

Biking adventure sober retreat

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to volunteer for the annual Twin Lakes expedition; an expedition that I participated in last year as a client. This year’s trip would prove to be more rewarding than last year’s. As a client in my first 30 days of sobriety, I had trouble finding the fun in the camping environment of Twin Lakes. That was not the case this year, as I was able to get out of my own head and sympathize with the current clients in their respective early sobrieties. We participated in AA and NA meetings around the campfire each night, which helped bring the collective group closer together. I witnessed early friendships forming by the end of the expedition, which I believe to be crucial for success in recovery. The clients became more open with one another, and faced their fears during certain activities like white water rafting….

JWL Moab Expedition

Active adventure addiction recovery

This past week Jaywalker Lodge ventured into the Utah desert on yet another successful and incredible Moab Expedition. This trip is amongst the favorites for both alumni of Jaywalker and the Clients themselves as they partake in mountain biking, rock climbing and hiking some of the country’s most unique and challenging trails and rock walls. For me this trip holds a special place. I am a staff member but on this trip and trips like it I am allowed the opportunity to take the clients mountain biking and watch our guys push themselves as well as one another. These expeditions provide a platform and exemplify one of the most profound aspects for what Jaywalker’s mission is, for young men early in recovery to help and support one another toward a positive and common goal. This is what helped me in my early recovery and is still what I see helping…

JWL Moab Expedition

extended care for men adventure bound

The Moab expedition has always been my favorite. I’ll never forget my first time there when I was a client in the Lodge. I had never been to Utah before, so I had no idea what to expect. I remember seeing nothing but empty fields once we crossed the border into Utah and I was wondering what the heck we were going to do in this barren, dried up wasteland. But once we got off our exit and made our way into the town, I was completely taken back by how beautiful the massive, red, rocky surroundings were. It was like I was in a Roadrunner and Wiley Coyote cartoon. Nothing has changed since that first trip; it still blows my mind every time I’m there. This last trip was just as special as the rest. With 23 clients in attendance, I was almost certain there would be some drama…
