Going Away Party

Yesterday we said goodbye to a dear friend and wonderful employee, Greg Benton, with a chicken salad cake party. Donnie did not come to the party and Greg was pissed to say the least. Greg was quoted as saying, “Donnie is supposed to be my friend, but I guess it’s whatever man. I see how it is.” Every one managed to have a great time, despite Donnie’s absence, and Greg truly felt loved by the Jaywalker community, except for Donnie. Greg is leaving to spend the summer with his family in Vermont and New Jersey. He will be returning to the area in the fall for one final semester at CMC, and then, it’s most likely off to Boulder to attend CU. We will be having a welcome back party for Greg in September, followed by another going away party in December when he leaves for CU. Greg is a…

Mission Wolf Expedition

As someone who works full time, is enrolled in school, and frequents the gym and meetings it is hard to find time off. So when I was given the opportunity to join some of the men at the Lodge on a service expedition I checked my calendar then cleared my schedule and jumped on the chance to detach for a few days and give back to a good cause. We learned about the legacy of Mission Wolf from its founder, Kent Weber, and about the phenomenal growth that has taken place there over the past 20 years. Kent brought us into the enclosures to meet the wolves face to face and one by one these giant animals, capable of snapping bones with their jaws, came up and licked our faces, happily receiving scratches behind the ears or on their bellies. For the next two days we were out in the…

Happy 2 Years Greg

Jaywalker would like to congratulate Greg Benton on celebrating 2 years of sobriety today! Greg grew up in New Jersey where he fell into drugs and alcohol at an early age. At the age of 20 Greg checked into Jaywalker Lodge with nothing but the clothes on his back and some hope. Little did Greg know that Jaywalker Lodge would be the place that saved his life and would later become his employer. Last year Greg started work for Jaywalker as the first live-in employee at Jaywalker U as the Residential Assistant (RA). Greg started filling in as the Residential Night Tech at Jaywalker Lodge where he started to find his true passions in helping other recovering alcoholics/addicts. Greg was soon offered the full time day tech position and has since done a fantastic job helping manage the Lodge. Now-a-days you can catch Greg riding his dirt bike, skiing, Crossfitting, fishing, Crossword…

Amazing Places

I hate Crossfit! So when I woke up this Saturday to be dragged to do the workout I was less than thrilled. It was during that hour at the gym that John and Donnie informed (not asked) me that we would be camping and riding dirt bikes for the next 36 hours, let it be known I am an extreme novice when it comes to riding dirt bikes, or at least I was two days ago. We left the gym, grabbed supplies and headed out to the Castle Creek area outside of Aspen. It was about the time that I crossed a river in my 98’ Nissan Frontier that I knew we weren’t turning back and it was about that time that I began thinking about how many episodes of Chopped were on the DVR and how much ice cream was in the freezer.  We pushed on, the couch at…
