Lake Powell 12 Step Retreat

Mens outdoor sober retreat

1…2…3… Go! Into the air I flew as I jumped from the cliff-side surrounding our cove at Lake Powell. As I surfaced from the water below, I can’t believe I had been worried at all about jumping. I found my small worries of jumping to be irrelevant, and in the end, everything turned out great. Countless other jumps from the cliffs followed. Just three days before, I had found myself in a similar situation facing the fears of leaving Jaywalker Lodge and returning to “the real world”. After being in the safety bubble of my primary rehab for a month and then ninety more days at Jaywalker, I had many fears about what obstacles would present themselves to me in my future sobriety. Would I be able to put into practice all I had learned in rehab? Would I be able to stay content with my life of sobriety? The…

Lenny Celebrates 8

Lenny sober living

Congratulations to Jaywalker’s own King of Aftercare, Lenny Beaulieu, for celebrating 8 years of sobriety.  He is a man of simple tastes: golf, cigars, Harleys, steak, and jumping out of airplanes.  Let go and let God or the parachute.  Skydiving is the ultimate test of faith and enjoyment of life; a metaphor for the values of a recovering person.  Lenny lives his life with faith and enjoyment.   He is an avid outdoors man, spending his early years working for Outward Bound.  He has also completed the Grand Canyon section of the Colorado River many times.  Lenny’s incredible life journey finally landed him as the Director of Outpatient Services at Jaywalker. I have had the pleasure of co-facilitating the outpatient groups with Lenny.  It has been a great experience for me to learn from his counseling style.  Lenny carries the message of the 12 steps with power and grace.  He has…

2015 Twin Lakes Expedition

Biking adventure sober retreat

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to volunteer for the annual Twin Lakes expedition; an expedition that I participated in last year as a client. This year’s trip would prove to be more rewarding than last year’s. As a client in my first 30 days of sobriety, I had trouble finding the fun in the camping environment of Twin Lakes. That was not the case this year, as I was able to get out of my own head and sympathize with the current clients in their respective early sobrieties. We participated in AA and NA meetings around the campfire each night, which helped bring the collective group closer together. I witnessed early friendships forming by the end of the expedition, which I believe to be crucial for success in recovery. The clients became more open with one another, and faced their fears during certain activities like white water rafting….

6th Annual Sedona Trip

Biking in sedona sober retreat

On Saturday May 9th I departed Carbondale with 10 Jaywalker alums for the 6th Annual Sedona Mountain Bike trip. I have been on the last 4, but this one was different as it would be the first alumni expedition for me in my new position as Alumni Coordinator. We rode Mag 7 in Moab on the way there and then rode for 3 more days in Sedona. We broke a few bikes, we got a few flats, we got a little bloody, and we got poked by cactus. We also spent ample time sunbathing by the pool and had a family style sit down dinner every night. The group was fantastic and the Sedona trip continues to be one of the best fellow-shipping experiences there is. All this made my first expedition as alumni coordinator a great success, with hopefully many more to come. Ben Marbach Alumni Coordinator Jaywalker Lodge

Recovery Ski Weekend

Jaywalker is honored to be welcoming the Phoenix Multisport group from the Denver area this weekend for another incredible weekend. Phoenix Multisport fosters a supportive, physically active community for individuals who are recovering from alcohol and substance abuse and those who choose to live a sober life. Through pursuits such as climbing, hiking, running, strength training, yoga, road/mountain biking, socials and other activities, we seek to help our members develop and maintain the emotional strength they need to stay sober. This will be the 6th year Jaywalker and Phoenix Multisport have engaged in some sober fun here in Aspen Colorado. Make plans to join us Saturday (Feb 28th) for skiing and dinner cooked by the famous Chef Brian Trom. We hope to see you there! For more information on Phoenix Multisport please Click Here! Congrats Alex

What can I say about Alex Colins except, Wow! What an incredible specimen of a man. I first met Alex at Fotion’s Gym in Carbondale, and knew from that moment that this was a guy I could learn something from. Not only is Alex the strongest man in all of Carbondale (soon to be the world) he is also incredibly kind, funny, humble and smart. But what I admire most about Alex is his willingness to help others in need. He has always been someone I can go to for advice, or at least vent to about my own drama. When Alex was working as a tech here at the Lodge I would watch as he worked diligently on his CAC classes. Working at Jaywalker is not a job Alex takes lightly; he really wants to make a difference in the lives of all the men here. Alex’s goal is…

JWU Rec Day

Every Friday the Jaywalker U students head out into the Rocky Mountains for a day of fun in sobriety. Today the JWU students spent the day golfing in beautiful Glenwood Springs, CO. Jaywalker U Student and golf extraordinaire, Sam S, taught all the students the basics of golf. It’s amazing how much fun a group of sober guys can have when they keep an open mind.
