Hooked on Hot Yoga

Take a yoga class? No way! A hot yoga class? An even crazier idea! That was my mindset. Yoga seemed like an activity for mystical and ridiculously flexible people, and I was neither. Now it has been 5 years of taking hot yoga classes. I’m still not mystical or very flexible, but I’m hooked on the hot yoga. I work with recovering addicts and alcoholics. Five years ago, a coworker we call Hot Yoga Steve suggested our program try offering hot yoga classes for our clients. The plan was to implement two classes per week starting at 6:45 AM. It seemed like something that could benefit our clients, and I could tag along and take the classes too. There is a love/hate relationship between hot yoga and me. Each night before a class, I love the idea that I get to do yoga in the morning. When I wake up…

April Alumni Spotlight – Brian G

I was born in Denver Colorado. I always had an affinity for outdoor sports and athletics. Growing up I felt like I never fit in anywhere but sports. When I turned fifteen I found drugs. Then I really felt like I fit in! Drugs were my way to escape. I didn’t have to worry about failing out of high school or being sent to an alternative school so I could graduate on time. When I moved to Steamboat Springs to go to college, it was my tiny window of sanity before my ultimate downfall. I was able to ski and have fun with some like minded people and attend classes sporadically. I couldn’t stay in one place for very long so I moved to Denver and attempted to help out with the family business of building and installing custom wine cellars. Over the course of moving there I fell in…

2015 Leadville 100 MTB Race

Dave & Stephen sober living

This past Saturday August 15th was the Leadville 100 MTB race, also known as the race across the sky. It is generally regarded as the hardest Mt bike race in the country as it spans 103 miles with a low point at 9200 ft. and a high point of 12,500 ft. This year there were three Jaywalker alumni who competed in this race. Dave K raced for his 3rd time, Stephen S for his 2nd and Bob M joined them in his first attempt. The Leadville race series is notorious for being the toughest tests of endurance around. Every year in this race there are hundreds of competitors who are unable to finish. We are Jaywalker alumni however and will not be denied. Bob M finished in 10:36, Stephen S in 9:00 and Dave K finished in a blistering 7:16 good enough for 28th place out of 1437 finishers. I…

Lenny Celebrates 8

Lenny sober living

Congratulations to Jaywalker’s own King of Aftercare, Lenny Beaulieu, for celebrating 8 years of sobriety.  He is a man of simple tastes: golf, cigars, Harleys, steak, and jumping out of airplanes.  Let go and let God or the parachute.  Skydiving is the ultimate test of faith and enjoyment of life; a metaphor for the values of a recovering person.  Lenny lives his life with faith and enjoyment.   He is an avid outdoors man, spending his early years working for Outward Bound.  He has also completed the Grand Canyon section of the Colorado River many times.  Lenny’s incredible life journey finally landed him as the Director of Outpatient Services at Jaywalker. I have had the pleasure of co-facilitating the outpatient groups with Lenny.  It has been a great experience for me to learn from his counseling style.  Lenny carries the message of the 12 steps with power and grace.  He has…
