Jaywalker Hut Life

Jaywalker Lodge clients and staff embarked on a winter expedition today to the 10th Mountain Division Huts to explore, ski, snowshoe, and 12 Step Study.  Jaywalker expeditions are designed to expose our men to a lifestyle change and healthy travel with men in recovery.  This hut trip is one of many our clients experience during their stay at Jaywalker, but continue with the Jaywalker Alumni Program.  We involve our alumni on trip with clients to share their experience, strength, and hope.  Over the next few days our men will get a taste of what we do in life after treatment.  This is a part of our recovery.

Hooked on Hot Yoga

Take a yoga class? No way! A hot yoga class? An even crazier idea! That was my mindset. Yoga seemed like an activity for mystical and ridiculously flexible people, and I was neither. Now it has been 5 years of taking hot yoga classes. I’m still not mystical or very flexible, but I’m hooked on the hot yoga. I work with recovering addicts and alcoholics. Five years ago, a coworker we call Hot Yoga Steve suggested our program try offering hot yoga classes for our clients. The plan was to implement two classes per week starting at 6:45 AM. It seemed like something that could benefit our clients, and I could tag along and take the classes too. There is a love/hate relationship between hot yoga and me. Each night before a class, I love the idea that I get to do yoga in the morning. When I wake up…

Brock B. – Alumni Blog

Overcoming Challenges – Xterra Race  By Brock B. I will start by saying that I never thought I would complete a triathlon.  In fact, before I moved to Carbondale, I had never even been on a mountain bike.  I remember during my intake at Jaywalker lodge, I expressed my concern about being able to keep up with the most basic fitness activities.  But I quickly fell in love with mountain biking.  I love being able to push myself to my physical limit on the uphill and then rip as fast as I can on the way back down.  Our Jaywalker alumni network has some of the best riders I have ever seen and they all push me to want to improve. I have been fortunate to work at a job that allows me to network with some of the most interesting people in the Roaring Fork Valley.  One of these…

Alumni Race Success in August

August Alumni Races Leadville 100 & Mt Sneffels 13.1 Over the weekend we had multiple Jaywalkers racing in Colorado.  First was the Leadville Trail 100 MTB race, which is a grueling race with 12,000 feet of climbing all above 9,000 feet elevation.  Three men competed in Leadville, one being Dave K. who came in 17th overall with a time of 7:07.  Leadville 100MTB rookie Breton M. smashed his debut and came in with a time of 8:25, which is well under the cutoff for a big buckle trophy.  Jaywalker Alum Bob M. set out to do something a little bigger for this race.  He raised $11,500 for Shatterproof which is a national organization that is dedicated to fighting addiction.  Bob also hammered out a 9:17 in the race, and exemplified the spirit of service. Secondly, we had two men run the Mt. Sneffels Half Marathon in Ouray, CO.  Seth H. and…

Lyons On The Brink

When’s the last time someone shared with you that you had been the answer to their prayers?  Can there be a more humbling observation than that? We as addicts were more accustomed to being the subject of prayers, said mostly by our loved ones pleading with God for our very survivals. Lyons, Colorado is in need of many answers right now.  They are not alone as there are many similar communities in our state who are in need. Solutions spent 4 days in Lyons in cooperation with NECHAMA, a Jewish relief organization, aiding flood ravaged victims who had few resources and homes buried in feet of mud. We dug and we dug and we dug some more. We tore out rotting dry wall and ripped up floors that had turned to sponges. We hauled piles of debris to the curb to be discarded but never forgotten.  We broke bread with…

2013 “Best Town Ever”

Jaywalker’s amazing home – Carbondale, Colorado, is recognized this month by Outside magazine as one of 17 finalists in the “Best Town Ever” crowdsourced contest. The stated goal of the online contest was to find “America’s best place to be healthy”. Ample trailheads, nearby adventure, and great farmers markets were some of the criteria used in the selection. Carbondale was noted for its prime trout fishing, food and festivals, superior bike trails, and access to the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness area. The one glaring omission was the world’s best Addiction Treatment Center and Recovery community ! We are beyond blessed to live in such a beautiful, vibrant, and progressive community. Although I haven’t visited all the finalist cities, Carbondale remains my first choice for the “Best City Ever”. Check out the Outside Magazine website for the complete story. With Gratitude, Mark Kloster

Twin Lakes, Colorado
