Living Large in Sobriety

If newcomers could see no joy or fun in our existence, they wouldn’t want it. We absolutely insist on enjoying life.” Enjoy life , we did! This past weekend, 13 Jaywalker Alumni and clients joined 200 other people seeking to enjoy life in Recovery. The Harmony foundation held the 3rd Annual National Recovery Skiathon at the Beaver Run resort in Breckenridge, Colorado. The attendees enjoyed 4 days of fellowship, music, comedy, speakers, movies and spectacular snow conditions. The event included participants from treatment centers, Alumni and families, treatment professionals and a great showing from Collegiate recovery programs. Jaywalker was a proud co-sponsor with 20 other national treatment programs. Our own, founder and CEO of Jaywalker, Bobby Ferguson, gave an incredible keynote address Saturday night sharing his vision of Living Large in Sobriety. We enjoyed great music from Nashville recording artist Sonia Lee and hilarious comedy from Kurtis Mathews. Based on…

Solutions

“Unity is strength… when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.” – Mattie Stepanek-Poet I have been member of the SOLUTIONS team since 2007 and am pleased to talk about our newest venture. SOLUTIONS has expanded our program into two phases, moved buildings, added staff and built a more robust curriculum. We have continued our partnership with Colorado Mountain College (CMC) to offer men in recovery a path to return to academics. Phase One of SOLUTIONS is now housed on 734 Main Street. The men are loving the new “digs” with its restaurant style kitchen, dining area which becomes board game central at night, the man-cave lounge area and multifaceted meeting/study area. Phase One is a 90-day program, with a Stage II recovery model. It is designed for men who are ready to assume personal accountability in a supportive environment. We encourage reintegration into the workplace or…

JWU Goals Group

Every week the men of Jaywalker U engage in a group to address personal goals that they have set and tracked during the previous week. Recovery principles ask us to participate in each others recovery by being supportive. This group provides a safe place for the men to ask for help in both setting and reaching these goals, and they do it together, as a team. The following list is what we focus on each week at JWU: 1. Recovery 2. Academics 3. Spirituality 4. Relationships/Family 5. Pre-professional 6. Household Duties 7. Health and Fitness As we ask for help, engage the support offered and follow through with our stated objectives we get closer every week to becoming the men we really want to be. This is the mission of our Goals and Accountability Group. Donnie Hagenbart Program Coordinator Jaywalker U

29 Years

Jaywalker U Program Director, Janet DeMars, celebrated 29 years of sobriety yesterday! Janet has been with Jaywalker U for two years now and has been a tremendous help to the students as well as myself. Along with working individually with the Jaywalker U students, Janet also counsels students at Colorado Mountain College. After moving to Carbondale from Minnesota Janet rekindled her love for the outdoors. She picked up mountain biking and road bike riding the day she got here. Recently, she started racing road bikes across the state of Colorado. Last month she participated in a 100 mile road bike ride and rumor has she will be entering another one next month. Congratulations Janet and thank you for everything you do! Donnie Hagenbart Program Coordinator Jaywalker U

2014 JWU Fall Orientation

Every semester the Jaywalker U students embark on a team-building/transformational trip where they not only work on themselves but also bond with their peers. For the second year in a row the Jaywalker U men headed to Steamboat Springs to explore their inner selves, get to know their peers, and spend some time relaxing and playing before starting the fall semester. We started the trip on Monday at Rabbit Ears Pass with local Carbondale life coach, Johann Aberger, for a day of hiking, climbing, team-building, and personal transformation. Throughout the day the students spent time looking at who they are and who they want to become all the while maintaining the principles of recovery and living a day at a time. At day’s end, Johann challenged everyone to look at their values, their passions, and to write a life purpose statement. After returning from the day with Johann, the guys…

3.71 GPA

Everyone here at Jaywalker would like to congratulate the Jaywalker U students for completing the 2014 spring semester with a house GPA of 3.71. During our addiction a lot of us were incapable of going to college, not to mention getting good grades. Here at Jaywalker U the students are showing us that recovery, college, and good grades are possible. The students at Jaywalker U are attending college in a new way:  they are drug free, they attend class, they personally meet their professors, they turn assignments in on time and they study for their tests.  These are the academic behaviors of students in recovery. Nice work guys and once again, congratulations! Recovery Campus

I love getting new issues of my favorite magazines and it is no different with the newest issue of “Recovery Campus.”   With each new publication, the editor, Trent Boozer, reports on the flourishing features of Collegiate Recovery Programs and the people who are making a difference.  A ‘sober college student’ is no longer an oxymoron.  Recovering alcoholics and addicts are getting younger and younger and higher education is adapting to the need and benefit of having sober college students populate their campuses.  Not only is “Recovery Campus” printed and distributed across the nation, it is also available online at http://recoverycampus.com/. The Bucket List Project: Climbing in Patagonia

Johann Aberger built the Bucket List Project after his father passed away from Parkinson’s Disease 3 years ago. It’s an invitation for people to live their highest calling. He says, “As part of this project, I’ve started a successful business, run the Leadville 100, and worked to inspire people from all over the world to live ‘on-purpose.’” In January of 2014, Johann traveled to the Fitz Roy region of Patagonia, in Southern Argentina. The trip was a creation of the Bucket-List Project with a simple commitment; to climb one of the major summits, come back safely, and to use the experience for the highest good. He says, “The landscape was stunning, the weather at times alarming, and the overall experience provided a level of insight that was rich and fulfilling.” “I look forward to sharing stories that speak to our impermanence, the value of risk, adventure and suffering, as well…
