The Sculpture has Landed

James Surls gave a loud “hoot” and tossed his cap into the air as the anxious crowd applauded the touchdown of the 20 foot sculpture onto the marble base where it will reside. There were dozens of onlookers, including those who have been working on Carbondale’s new traffic roundabout. The labor for bronze and steel sculpture “Sewing the Future” was donated by world renowned artist James Surls because of his love for Carbondale. Although, a Texas transplant, James raised his seven daughters in the Roaring Fork Valley and says he doesn’t plan on leaving anytime soon. The $200,000 in funds needed for the materials, casting, and fabrication were raised through a community outreach effort which included the assistance of several of the Jaywalker men. Bicycle Friendly Community

Carbondale, Colorado has been recognized by The League of American Bicyclists as a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community. The creation of Carbondale’s new Community Bike Park made it possible for Carbondale to jump from a Bronze Level Certification to a Gold status. Java Good Time?

Jaywalker Lodge, pioneer of the Open Community Model of Care, ™ proudly announces the launch of our first “social enterprise” venture in downtown Carbondale, CO. Jaywalker recently purchased The Blend, an established and popular coffee shop which is located immediately next door to the Jaywalker Alumni/Community Center. The retail business will be managed and staffed by Jaywalker alumni and clients, and all proceeds will be donated to a charity called, A Way Out.  A Way Out is a program which supports locals in the Roaring Fork Valley, who are recovering from addiction.
