Gardening Collaborative

Empowering community through education, sustainable projects, and gardens for hunger relief within our communities. Kim Willie of Growing Food Forward stated, ” Last Thursday volunteers from Jaywalker Lodge, A New Path, and Aspire Women’s Recovery did a great job in an hour and a half; hand-tilling the soil, cutting and planting potatoes, and mulching them in with layers of straw and organic compost from Pitkin County Landfill in the three beds behind the Third Street Center in Carbondale, CO.” What a great collaborative effort to do our small part to help bring fresh, local, organic produce to those in need. Kim Willie, and the Growing Food Forward project have planted almost 100 gardens this spring and summer which will help supply our local food pantries like Lift-Up, with healthy, nutritious food. Our Recovery programs which have the opportunity to be part of this incredible undertaking, also derive a great benefit…

Congratulations Lois

In celebration of Lois’s 24th recovery anniversary, I’d like to express a few words of gratitude and appreciation.  I’ve had the privilege of knowing Lois for many years and over that time she’s supported me in every aspect of my life and recovery.  From addiction counselor, to mentor, family counselor, to fellow traveler- Lois has always made time for me in her busy schedule and I know she’s done the same for countless others.  I also credit Lois with the success of my current career.  Many years ago, knowing I wasn’t satisfied with my current position, Lois encouraged me to go back to school to pursue counseling.   At the time I still didn’t believe in myself, but Lois believed in me, and I leaned on her faith to provide the courage I needed to complete school and start a new career.  Today I have the job of my dreams-…

Happy New Year

Today we welcome the New Year! The New Year gives us a chance to reflect on the year gone by and a chance to make this one the best we possibly can. Last night Jaywalker U teamed up with A New Path for an exciting night. Holidays can be tough for those in sobriety and what better way to celebrate new beginnings then with our sober friends in the community. Over 20 Jaywalker U and A New Path clients/alumni went out to eat, attended an AA meeting, and counted down the New Year at the Glenwood Springs Hot Springs. Jaywalker would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year. Here’s to 2014! Donnie Hagenbart Program Coordinator Jaywalker U

Third Street Center State Fair

Follow us to the Third Street Center an see what the hubbub is all about…The fall fair is open to everyone.” Kat Rich volunteer event coordinator The Third Street Center here in Carbondale was bustling with activity Friday evening. This was the inaugural “State Fair” event which featured a carnival atmosphere with performances by local artists and musicians, games, food, and fun for kids and adults alike. I had the opportunity to play Eco-jeopardy, hear some great music, and install a leaf on the Gratitude Tree. There was a chili cook-off (I’ll have a vegan entry next year), a Cake Walk with our very own Rocky’s famous Death by Chocolate cake and ample quantities of State Fair food and snacks. The TSC ,Third Street Center is a community place that promotes inspiration, sustainability, and creative exchange. This event was a “Friend – Raiser” to show its gratitude for the community’s…

Farewell Party for Brian Greenwald

Please mark your calendars for Wednesday October 16 at 5:30 pm as we celebrate Brian Greenwald’s contribution to our recovery community and wish him success on his next adventure in California. We will meet at the Jaywalker Clubhouse (next to the Blend coffee shop) and share food, fun and memories. Brian grew up in the Denver area and came to Carbondale to enter the Jaywalker program. He is an accomplished athlete, an amazing breakdancer, and a shining example of the possibilities a sober life can provide. Brian has been a valuable Jaywalker Alumni and has helped a countless number of men in their recoveries. Brian has most recently served as Client Coordinator for A New Path here in Carbondale. I am honored to call Brian a friend and his incredible presence in our Recovery community will be truly be missed. With Gratitude, Mark Kloster Alumni Coordinator

FREEDOM

We are going to know a new Freedom and a new Happiness. Alcoholics Anonymous pg. 83 More than 50 sober friends gathered for a traditional 4th of July Bar-B-Que at one of A New Paths’ sober houses this afternoon. Jaywalker alumni, New Path clients, and friends of Bill W. celebrated a Sober Independence Day with Burgers, Brats, fellowship, and fun. The ability to enjoy a Holiday with friends and family without the chains of addiction is an incredible gift of a Life in Recovery. The only choice we had in the depths of our addictions was how and when we were going to get our next drink or our next high. Now, when we make the choice not to drink or use we open up a world of possibilities. Today, we went to parades, listened to live music, mountain biked, went to the movies and enjoyed a BBQ with friends….

RECOVERY MAGIC

Those of us who have struggled with this disease of addiction know there are no quick fixes, miracle cures, or chemical solutions to this progressive and potentially fatal disease. “Remember that we deal with alcohol- cunning, baffling, powerful! Without help it is too much for us.” Fortunately, we live in a valley that is rich with recovery resources and is steeped in sobriety. I was reminded at Saturdays Aftercare Panel presentation for Jaywalker’s Family Program just how extraordinary the Carbondale community is in providing an environment where miracles can happen! As staff members shared the various programs now available through Jaywalkers extensive continuum of care, I heard a family member state that Jaywalker and Carbondale are, “Recovery Magic” and unique in the treatment realm. We are truly blessed with a wealth of programs; The Lodge, Solutions, the Jaywalker University, Intensive Out Patient, A New Path, and multiple sober living opportunities….
